Anne Hathaway said in a new interview that she and the producers behind The Princess Diaries 3 are "constantly working on" the new movie
A sequel to 2004's The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement has been in development for roughly 10 years
Hathaway has several movies releasing this year, including Mother Mary on April 24 and The Devil Wears Prada 2 on May 1
Anne Hathaway is in the midst of a busy year, but she's still intent on returning to Genovia in the near future.
"100%, we’re constantly working on it," Hathaway, 43, told Entertainment Weekly of a long-awaited third Princess Diaries movie during a recent interview she and Meryl Streep took part in as they promote The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Hathaway told the outlet that "[Devil Wears Prada 2] cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space" while she filmed that sequel throughout last summer.

"It became impossible to focus on both at the same time," she added of the third Princess Diaries movie, which would serve as a follow-up to 2004's The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Hathaway told EW that her "intention is to make Princess Diaries hopefully next," but she noted that the next movie in the series "is not greenlit or confirmed yet."
"If I learned anything from [Devil Wears Prada 2], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park," Hathaway added. Streep, 76, told Hathaway, "You've got to wait for the right script."
Hathaway famously broke out in Hollywood playing the character Mia Thermopolis in 2001's The Princess Diaries, based on the book of the same name by Meg Cabot.
The original movie follows Mia as a San Francisco high school student who discovers she is heir to a fictional European kingdom called Genovia, ruled by her grandmother Clarisse (Julie Andrews) and Mia's decision to claim her title as the country's princess, while the sequel sees Mia learn she must marry before she can succeed Clarisse as Genovia's queen.

Garry Marshall, the late filmmaker who directed the series' first two entries, told PEOPLE as far back as 2016 that he and Hathaway intended to make a third Princess Diaries movie. Marshall died at 81 that same year, though development on a sequel continued.

Hathaway said in 2019 that the third film had a script and that she and Andrews, now 90, were prepared to make the movie. In 2022, multiple outlets reported that Disney was developing a third Princess Diaries movie, and filmmaker Adele Lim (Joy Ride) was brought on to direct the project in October 2024.

At that time, Hathaway wrote "Miracles happen" and "The fairy tale continues" in an Instagram post as she confirmed Lim's involvement with the movie.
Hathaway's promises regarding The Princess Diaries come in the midst of an extraordinarily busy year.
Her new movie Mother Mary hits theaters everywhere April 24, and The Devil Wears Prada 2 is in theaters May 1. She will also costar with Matt Damon and Tom Holland in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which releases in July, and appear with Ewan McGregor in August's The End of Oak Street. In October, she costars with Josh Hartnett and Dakota Johnson in Verity, an adaptation of author Colleen Hoover's novel of the same name.
