Sources are offering insight into Audrey Hepburn’s romantic life and her approach to relationships.
“Audrey’s big thing was discretion,” author Pamela Keogh said.
Hepburn’s son, Luca, also shared his thoughts on her love life.

“Audrey’s big thing was discretion,” Pamela Keogh, author of Audrey Style, told People on August 12. “And unlike some Hollywood stars, boy, you didn’t know who she was seeing and what she was doing.”
The Breakfast at Tiffany’s star was married twice. Her first husband was actor and director Mel Ferrer, whom she married in 1954. The couple welcomed their son, Sean, in 1960, and divorced in 1968.
Hepburn wed her second husband, psychiatrist Andrea Dotti, in 1969. Their son Luca was born in 1970, and they divorced in 1982.

In addition to her two husbands, she also dated actor Robert Wolders from 1982 until she died in 1993.
Hepburn’s son Luca, 56, spoke with People about his mother’s love life.

“My mother was very much in love with both her husbands, and Robert Wolders at the end,” he said. “The first two were, in different ways, not so perfect in the equation.”
He also noted that she and Wolders’s relationship was special, particularly because he seemingly wasn’t threatened by her fame.
“My mother was very much in love with the men she loved,” he said. “I don’t know if she was quality-wise loved back in the same manner. Certainly by Robert Wolders, she was, because maybe he was the only one or the one who suffered less from her stardom figure. Men way back then had the difficulty of being the consort, being number two.”

Although Hepburn and Wolders never officially married, Luca said that they lived like they were.
“In essence, they were married,” he said. “Maybe they didn’t have an official ceremony or things like that, but marriage is everyday life. In everyday life, they’ve been through so much—at home with us and especially with UNICEF around the world. So if that kind of relationship is not marriage, what is?”
