Avengers Endgame: Encore Tops the Box Office as Marvel Crosses $35 Billion

A seven-year-old Marvel movie just did something almost no rerelease has ever pulled off. Avengers Endgame: Encore returned to theaters with a global opening that’s rewriting the record books and pushing Marvel past a massive milestone.

Avengers Endgame: Encore makes $86 million globally

Avengers Endgame: Encore earned an estimated $86 million worldwide in its opening weekend, according to Deadline and Disney. The rerelease collected $26 million domestically and $60 million from international markets. Disney estimates this as the second-highest global debut ever for a rerelease.

The domestic opening ranks third among re-releases. Only 1997’s Star Wars re-issue ($35.9 million) and 2011’s The Lion King 3D ($30.2 million) started higher. Overseas, Titanic 3D’s $67 million debut in 2012 remains the only bigger foreign opening for a re-release. Meanwhile, Imax screens generated $13.7 million, including $4 million domestically and $9.7 million abroad.

Disney’s Global Head of Distribution Andrew Cripps said the result shows a massive fanbase for the franchise. He also noted the film is seven years old and already streams on Disney+. Internationally, the film opened at No. 1 in China with $13.5 million. It also topped the UK ($5.4 million), Mexico ($4.2 million), Italy ($2.6 million), and Brazil ($2.2 million). In Korea, it ranked second during the Chuseok holidays behind local film The Assassin.

The weekend lifted Avengers: Endgame’s lifetime global total to $2.885 billion. The film now ranks second all-time, only $39 million behind Avatar. Additionally, Marvel Studios crossed $35.075 billion globally across its 38 films. The re-release played in over 3,000 theaters, including over 1,300 Infinity Vision screens. Those screens delivered about 52% of the opening weekend figure.

The rerelease also featured exclusive footage setting up Avengers: Doomsday, which opens December 18. Anthony and Joe Russo direct Doomsday, with Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom.

“We weren’t going to mess with what that movie is,” Anthony Russo said of the new additions. Moreover, the film holds a 96% Verified Moviegoer rating on Rotten Tomatoes across over 2,500 ratings. PostTrak polling also gives it five out of five stars.
