Charlie Kirk’s Mom Defends Erika Kirk One Year After She Took Over Turning Point USA

Charlie Kirk’s widow, Erika, and his mother, Kathryn, spoke with Vanity Fair about the aftermath of their lives following the Sept. 10, 2025 assassination of the right-wing commentator

Kathryn stated that her son would have wanted Erika to take over his role as the Turning Point USA CEO, saying, “We were 100 percent behind her”

Kathryn also denied rumors of conflict with her daughter-in-law over Charlie’s will and organization

Charlie Kirk‘s widow, Erika Kirk, and his mother, Kathryn Kirk, are speaking out about the aftermath of Charlie’s Sept. 10, 2025 assassination, detailing how Erika took over the right-wing political commentator’s role at Turning Point USA.

Erika and Kathryn talked to Vanity Fair about the public scrutiny Erika has faced since being named the CEO of the organization in an interview published on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The controversial speaker founded the right-wing nonprofit organization dedicated to high school and college students in 2012, and Erika, 37, took over his position as CEO after he was fatally shot at Utah Valley University.

Erika’s rise to the organization’s helm has drawn scrutiny and controversy, including questions surrounding her leadership and the direction of the conservative group. In April, the president of Turning Point USA’s University of Georgia chapter resigned from her position, claiming the organization had strayed from Charlie’s vision under Erika’s leadership.

However, Charlie’s mother told Vanity Fair that Erika is who he wanted in the role, and that in the wake of Charlie’s death, he would be upset about how Erika is treated on social media.

“We knew Charlie in a way that no one else did. We can look at each other’s eyes, and we know the depth of our despair,” Kathryn said.

She also denied conspiracy theories that she and her husband, Robert Willard Kirk, don’t get along with Erika, and that they’re fighting over Charlie’s will and Turning Point.

“We were 100 percent behind her,” Kathryn said about her daughter-in-law. “Erika and I have, through the trauma, grown closer.”

Following Charlie’s death, his parents remained out of the spotlight. Kathryn noted that on the day of his death, a TMZ reporter called her at an inopportune time. “Before I talked to my daughter. Before I was running the car,” she said in Tuesday’s interview.

Over a month after Charlie’s death, President Donald Trump honored the late commentator with a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House on Oct. 14. Both his parents attended, as Sen. Marsha Blackburn shared on Instagram.

When asked by Vanity Fair how Erika wanted her two children — a daughter and son born in August 2022 and May 2024, respectively — to remember her, she said she hopes they will know how deeply she loved them and how much her faith shaped her life.

As for Erika’s response to the criticism, she told Vanity Fair, “I’m built different. I do not know how to explain it other than this world will not break me.”

She also opened up about her grieving process this past year, saying she makes her choices with the hope of one day seeing him again. She told the outlet that every decision she makes is based on the question of whether this “will this bring me closer to heaven or further away from it?”

Erika continued: “I am so fixated and paranoid of having anything keeping me from going to heaven to be reunited with my husband.”
