Dwayne Johnson recalled his late grandfather during the new footage release of Moana at Disney’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas. He said, “I lived with this character of Maui for 10-plus years. The animated version was just an amazing experience for us as Polynesian people. The 53-year-old further added, “The character of Maui was deeply inspired by my grandfather.” Moreover, Johnson shared a picture of his late grandfather, leading to a round of applause from the crowd. “This is for you, High Chief,” he said.
The Fast & Furious actor also said, “Maui has been with me for over a decade, and to have the opportunity to bring this powerful and vulnerable demigod to life means so much to me.” Additionally, he delivered a powerful speech about the titular character while welcoming the leading lady, Catherine Laga’aia. “The hero of our story is not a princess; she’s a warrior,” he expressed. The father of three shared how his character empowers Moana. “All men of all ages, we should empower, support, and champion all women. That’s what real masculinity looks like,” he said.

Johnson, who is one of the producers of Moana (2026), explained the reason behind the creation of the live-action version. “There’s something special and important [when] you take animation into live-action,” he claimed. The professional wrestler continued, “We’re able to showcase our Pacific island, real people, and it’s humbling and inspiring all at once.” Johnson also voiced the character of Maui in both parts of the animated franchise. In the new trailer, Moana is told, “Moana, the ocean chose you.” She meets Maui, who tells her, “Don’t worry, Maui always has time for fans.” He further says, “Let’s go save the world.”
