Even Stevens star shared her experience about working with Shia LaBeouf on the show. She spoke about the reason behind their incompatibility on set. Moreover, she drew comparisons about how differently they were both raised.
Shia LaBeouf and Christy Carlson Romano’s Disney-era rift gets new context
In a conversation with the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Romano revealed that she and LaBeouf were like “oil and water” while working on Even Stevens together as young kids.
She credited their different upbringings for their incompatibility on set. She said, “I was being raised and brought up to be this type A, I mean exactly like Ren Stevens. Like, you know your lines, you hit your marks, you don’t mess up.”
She added that being a New York kid comes with a certain echelon. At the time, Romano was also trying to get admitted to Juilliard’s pre-college program. On top of that, her mother referred to all the training as “cross-training,” which came with a significant cost.

Meanwhile, she also reflected on the kind of childhood LaBeouf experienced. “He was a Venice Beach kind of bum kid. It’s like that kind of vagrant fun, but also very chaotic and very scary lifestyle, and he was very young to be having that,” she continued. The actress compared his upbringing and experiences to those depicted in the 1995 film Kids by Larry Clark.
Even Stevens follows a seventh-grade boy who struggles to find his footing at school and in his seemingly perfect family. Along the way, he constantly tries to annoy his very successful and hardworking older sister. As a result, he often lands himself in difficult or chaotic situations. However, his best friend typically steps in to bail him out.
The series ran on Disney Channel from June 17, 2000, to June 2, 2003.
