The 60-year-old actor, who co-wrote and starred in the 2000 music rom-com, explained on a recent episode of the *Happy Sad Confused* podcast that he didn’t watch the Zoë Kravitz-led Hulu series because no one ever reached out to him about it during production.

“Did you ever, out of curiosity, see… the Zoë Kravitz show?” host Josh Horowitz asked. “Was that a curiosity to see a different interpretation of it?”

Cusack revealed that he did not, in fact, press play. “No, I didn’t,” he replied. “Because nobody asked me about it. So I sort of thought, ‘Okay, well, that’s cool.’”

The *Say Anything* star also noted that he’d worked with Kravitz’s mom Lisa Bonet on the original film. She portrayed a singer named Mare de Salle, with whom his character Rob spends an evening in the comedy.

John Cusack makes rare comment about why he pivoted away from film career

“I’d also worked with her father, Lenny [Kravitz], but I just thought…,” Cusack continued, trailing off. “They didn’t call about it, so, I thought… I didn’t see it.”

Based on Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel of the same name, *High Fidelity* follows newly single and definitely still heartbroken record store owner Rob (Cusack) as he reflects on his five worst breakups of all time. The film featured a star-studded cast that included Jack Black, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tim Robbins, and even included a cameo appearance from the boss himself, Bruce Springsteen.

Both the novel and film were used as the inspiration for Hulu’s television series, which gender-swapped the cast and starred Kravitz as Rob. The romantic drama, which was developed by Veronica West (*Dexter: New Blood*) and Sarah Kucserka (*The Summer I Turned Pretty*), also starred Jake Lacy, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and future Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

Despite receiving a heavy heaping of praise upon its Valentine’s Day release, Hulu announced that* High Fidelity *had played its last song after just one season in August 2020. Kravitz lamented the move in an Instagram post at the time and has continued to express her hope for a revival.

Earlier this year, Kravitz blasted Hulu for being “tacky” after the streamer referenced her *High Fidelity* character on social media while celebrating her fiancé Harry Styles’ new album, *Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally*. The post was subsequently deleted.
