A Different World, which came to Netflix on Sept. 24, introduced a new group of freshmen to the ups and downs of life at Hillman College, a fictional historically Black university. The Netflix series is a sequel and also includes stars and characters from the original series, which aired for six seasons from 1987 to 1993.

The first season primarily followed Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon) as she experiences her first year at Hillman — the same school her parents, Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), attended decades earlier.

Deborah quickly finds her footing at Hillman and meets a solid group of friends. However, she also picks up an on-again, off-again romance with Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV) that has its highs and lows throughout their first year. New friend Ellington (Vincent Jamal Hooper) also throws a wrench into the relationship when he expresses interest in her.

Of course, Deborah isn’t the only student with a complicated love life. Her friends, Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), Hazel (Kennedi Reece), Amir (Jordan Aaron Hall) and Kojo (Chibuikem Uche), also have unresolved love lives.

“I think it’s important for Black people to be able to be messy,” showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride told Tudum. “I don’t want to strip us of our humanity. It’s important to see us fully excellent, fully messy, fully joyful, fully not getting it quite right.”

Do Deborah and Shaquille end up together?

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree on A Different World.

Just like her parents, Dwayne and Whitley, Deborah faces a jam-packed freshman year at Hillman with romantic highs and lows. Before stepping into the Hillman halls, it’s revealed that Deborah had an intense romance with Shaquille.

Although the two experienced a previous incident that they don’t share until later on, they try to give their connection a serious shot and begin to date. However, their relationship suffers from various challenges — including communication, trust and interest from third parties.

Just when it seems like Deborah and Shaquille may have more cons than pros together, their past comes to light. It’s revealed that a year prior to attending Hillman together, Deborah lost her virginity to Shaquille, but immediately afterward, they went to a warehouse party that caught fire and were both punished by their parents.

Unfortunately for the couple, the timing was less than ideal, as Deborah thought Shaquille was ghosting her after such an intimate and important moment for her, but in reality, Shaquille’s dad had grounded him and taken away all forms of communication. The two have an emotional conversation about the ordeal that finally explains Deborah’s hesitations and fears.

The moment appears to bond the two of them, so in an attempt to give Shaquille another chance, she asks him if he had slept with anyone else since they had been on and off. Shaquille assures Deborah that she’s “the only one,” but the sweet sentiment doesn’t last long.

Shortly after reciprocating and confessing her love for Shaquille, Deborah finds his sweatshirt in her RA Candace’s (Renee Harrison) room. Deborah confronts Shaquille over the discovery, and she breaks up with him after coming to the realization that the two had had sex.

The first season ends with Deborah’s friend Amir (Jordan Aaron Hall) telling her that Shaquille wants her back. Deborah’s devastation doesn’t last for long, as she returns to her dorm room to see Ellington has surprised her with rose petals scattered across the room and expresses his interest in her.

Deborah’s love triangle with Shaquille and Ellington is far from the only messy relationship dynamic among the Hillman students.

Earlier on in the season, best friends Amir and Hazel meet junior Jalen (Elijah J. Roberts), and not before long, Hazel and Jalen develop an intense romantic connection. However, at the same time, Amir and Jalen’s bond deepens throughout the year, and Amir begins to think of Jalen as more than just a friend.

Amir and Jalen’s relationship turns physical, and Amir later confides in best friend Hazel that he hooked up with her boyfriend. Although the confession immediately causes a division between the two, they later have an honest conversation where they put Jalen aside and prioritize their friendship. Hazel also drops the major bombshell that she has a secret long-distance boyfriend back home.

Hazel explains that she and her boyfriend, Roger, grew up together in religious households and felt pressure to abide by all the things their families believed in, so instead of coming to terms with what she wanted, she lied to Roger, Jalen and Amir.

Meanwhile, Amir and Jalen also have a heartfelt discussion where Jalen confesses that he hadn’t previously pictured himself being with a man. Although Jalen is nervous, he still wants to take a chance with Amir, and the two share a kiss.

At the end of the first season, Jalen finally apologizes to Hazel for cheating on her, but she also admits that she wasn’t as honest as she could’ve been, either.

However, Hazel may still have some explaining to do, as she learns that Roger will be coming to attend Hillman next year.

Do Rashida and Kojo end up together?

Rashida and Kojo are another will-they-won’t-they pair who have their ups and downs at Hillman.

The two immediately hit it off after meeting, but when things start to heat up, Rashida tells Kojo that she’s starting to feel pressure to lose her virginity and wants to cool things down. During their break, Rashida develops a bond with quarterback Andre (Joshua Suiter) over mutual interests. Meanwhile, Rashida starts to believe that Kojo has also moved on with Nneka (Uche Moxam).

However, Rashida and Kojo can’t seem to stay away from each other, and Kojo admits to her that he was also a virgin, wasn’t trying to pressure her and apologizes. They decide to try and give their relationship another shot and sleep together, with Rashida asking Kojo to spend the summer with her at Hillman.

Unfortunately, their blissful period doesn’t last long, as Rashida becomes emotional with Deborah and reveals that she actually lost her virginity to Andre during her break from Kojo and regrets not waiting for him.

In the season finale, Andre tracks down Rashida and asks her why she ghosted him after they slept together. Kojo hears the entire conversation play out and angrily storms off with Nneka, leaving Rashida devastated.

How does A Different World season 1 end?

In addition to several of the relationships ending on ambiguous notes, there are several other cliffhangers.

After Kojo angrily leaves with Nneka upon learning that Rashida secretly slept with Andre, he’s confronted by an ICE agent who asks to see “his papers.” Showrunner Pride explained to The Wrap that the “ICE storyline was something that we really wanted to pursue and make sure that we got right.”

“Having him approached on campus is real because there certain campuses where administration has allowed ICE to be on campus … we wanted to address that,” Pride shared. “We explore things like immigration and ICE because it’s just so prevalent as well in our communities and beyond.”

Meanwhile, Amir may also face legal issues ahead. Just when he appears to be ready to fall for Jalen and shares a kiss with him, Amir’s probation officer confronts him and tells him there is a warrant out for his arrest. He says that Amir had attended a student protest instead of attending a required check-in.

Another character whose future may look different than he anticipated could be Shaquille. In the midst of his complicated love life with Deborah, he receives an offer to play football at the University of Colorado. By the end of the season, Shaquille hasn’t made up his mind, but his past may influence his decision.

When he starts to pack up, Shaquille pulls out a photo of his late mother, who turns out to be A Different World alum Jaclyn (Halle Berry).

Shaquille also isn’t the only character to drop a bombshell about their background. Ellington — who has quietly been pursuing Deborah — reveals in the season finale that his mother is none other than Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet), who was the star of the original A Different World. He explains that her married name was Denise Kendall, but she now goes by Huxtable again.
