Prince William refused to answer questions about his uncle Charles Spencer’s new memoir, which is about his late mom Princess Diana.
The future king was asked about the explosive new book on September 22 while out in London for an official engagement.
Buckingham Palace released a rare statement in response to the biography, which include claims that King Charles was “giddily elated” when he learned of Diana’s death.
Prince William kept with royal protocol as he fielded questions about his uncle Charles Spencer’s memoir on his late mom, Princess Diana, on September 22. Amid the book’s shocking claims about his father, King Charles, and other explosive revelations about the royal family, William had a telling reaction when he was asked if he’d read Swan Song: Diana, My Sister during an official appearance in London.
Per the Daily Mail, the Prince of Wales kept his expression neutral as he was asked by a reporter, “Sir, how do you feel about your uncle’s book? Have you read it?” during an outing at ActOne, which is an independent movie theater in west London. William refused to answer, keeping the day’s focus on his work highlighting the British film industry. According to the publication, the prince later took his place behind the counter to serve popcorn to customers who’d arrived to watch a movie.

The book, which was officially released on September 22, has made headlines with Spencer alleging that Charles was “giddily elated” when he learned of Diana’s death. Spencer claimed Charles told him that she would be forgotten “soon enough.” Spencer also suggests in the book that the royal family disregarded Diana’s own wishes for her funeral.
Buckingham Palace broke with tradition by responding to early claims from the book in a statement from King Charles last week. “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment, and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss,” the statement read.

While William is staying publicly mum on the drama, a source who’s close to the future king told The Times that he “has found the past week incredibly difficult.” The insider added, “Although it has been hard to see all the claims, William clearly sees that there’s nothing to be gained from fanning the flames by saying anything.”

Hello!’s royal editor Emily Nash argued that William has been put in a tough position with his uncle’s claims. “William is the person, I think, may be in the most difficult situation, because whatever his feelings behind the scenes, he has to keep the show on the road,” she shared during an appearance on the outlet’s “A Right Royal Podcast.”
“This is his future and his family’s future. And if you’re lobbing a grenade at the institution… Really? Because it’s not just the king who’s being accused of things here, it’s the whole palace machinery,” Nash explained.
