Sarah Sherman recalled Paul McCartney pulling her mullet and jokingly asking if it was real or a wig when they met on the Saturday Night Live set last month

Sherman shared her admiration for McCartney, calling McCartney II her favorite album and "Temporary Secretary" her favorite song

She discussed the encounter with PEOPLE at the Las Culturistas Culture Awards and previously on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Sarah Sherman is opening up about her hair-raising encounter with Paul McCartney.

During a past episode of Saturday Night Live, Sherman, 33, mentioned that her mullet hairstyle was reminiscent of McCartney as he too once rocked a similar look.

Then, when McCartney, 84, appeared on SNL as the musical guest on May 16 for the season 51 finale, hosted by Will Ferrell, he decided to observe Sherman's hair as the end credits rolled.

"So, basically I was doing a bit talking about how I have his mullet from his Wings era," Sherman explained in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE during the 5th Annual Las Culturistas Culture Awards at the United Theater in Los Angeles on May 30. "And so he came up to me after the show and he pulled up my mullet and he was like, 'Is it real or is it a wig?' "

"And I said, 'It's real, Paul,' " the SNL star recalled. "And then, I was like, 'Paul McCartney, I love you, you're amazing. Like, McCartney II is my favorite album ever, and 'Temporary Secretary' is my favorite song.' And then I was like, 'I'm sorry I'm complimenting you so much.' And he said, 'I love adulation. Adulate me. Adulate me.' "

"Yeah, it was awesome. It was awesome," Sherman added of her encounter with the music legend.

Sherman previously talked about their encounter on the SNL set during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that she shared on TikTok.

"And so, he came up to me at the goodnights, like when we're all bowing or whatever," she recalled. "He said, 'Sarah,' and he knew my name, brag. He pulled on my mullet tails."

"I think it's very rare that somebody gets their mullet pulled by a Beatle," host Jimmy Kimmel replied. Sherman added, "And I liked it!"

"As long as he doesn't pull too hard, why not?" Kimmel, 58, continued.

The musician released his third solo studio album, McCartney II, in 1980, and he performed all the instruments himself. Although it was a bit different from McCartney's sound at the time, the record has since become a cult favorite among fans.

As for Sherman, she first joined SNL in 2021 as a featured player before getting promoted to the repertory cast in October 2023.

In December 2025, Sherman spoke with PEOPLE about her HBO Max stand-up special, Sarah Squirm: Live + in the Flesh. "My biggest fear with the special is that people see the poster and it's like, 'Oh, a clown with a queer haircut. This isn't for me. I live in Texas and I drive a truck,' or something," she said.

She added, "I would hope there's enough jokes in there that it's like, anyone watches it. It's a crazy thing to think, but I'm like, there's enough jokes that I think that maybe anyone could like it. Maybe."

Outside of SNL and her comedy special, Sherman has made appearances in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and Roommates.

Sarah Squirm: Live + in the Flesh is now streaming on HBO Max.
