Shannon Elizabeth is looking back at the controversial hidden-camera scene in American Pie.
“With the whole #MeToo movement, everyone is scared to say anything now,” Elizabeth said of the scene, which sees Jason Biggs’ character set up a secret cam to catch Elizabeth’s Nadia changing.
“I don’t go back and analyze it content-wise,” Elizabeth said, adding that the film “made everything for me.”
Shannon Elizabeth is revisiting an iconic scene in her career that has over time become mired in controversy.
The Houston-born actress broke out in 1999 as Nadia, a happy-go-lucky foreign exchange student who catches every male character’s fancy in American Pie. One particularly memorable scene features Nadia in what she assumes is a private moment of undress. But little does she know, Jason Biggs’ Jim has planted a hidden camera to capture her.
“With the whole #MeToo movement, everyone is scared to say anything now or do anything, and comedy is always going to offend somebody, so it’s just a different day and age,” Elizabeth toldVarietyon Thursday, while looking back on the the scene. “But I think it will all come back around at some point. People are yearning for connection.”

American Pie proved a turning point for Elizabeth, who, prior to stepping into a screen acting career, worked as a professional model. The film centers on Biggs’ hapless high school student, who yearns for sexual experience that his friends continually tease him for lacking.
“I love American Pie. It meant a lot for my life and my career. I don’t go back and analyze it content-wise, and it made everything for me. I don’t have anything bad to say about it,” Elizabeth continued.

Elizabeth’s big scene occurs just after Biggs’ infamous encounter with an apple pie that lends the film its title. Her Czech exchange student asks for his help studying after ballet class, and he agrees on one (secret) condition: his friend Stifler’s (Seann William Scott) demand to set up a hidden cam to catch her changing.
Jim picks up the gauntlet laid down by Stifler, but the broadcast beams not just to his friends, but to their entire school. As a consequence, Nadia’s enraged sponsors send her packing back to Europe.

The scene has been the subject of several debates as cultural mores have shifted around the representation of women and sex on screen. Many have decried Nadia’s inability to consent to the sexual act. Even Elizabeth has pointed out in past interviews that the scene would not have withstood scrutiny had it been written into a script today.
“If this had come out after the #MeToo movement, there would definitely be a problem. I think that it would have gone down differently,” she told Page Six in 2019.
Biggs concurred in an interview with BuzzFeed Newsthe following year. “It wouldn’t get made now and it couldn’t get made now,” he said. “It would be unacceptable what that represents, but at the time I remember reading the script and reading that part and being shocked that there was cameras on computers! That’s what I took away from it originally!”
