The Britney Spears biopic draws from her 2023 memoir, “The Woman in Me.” Universal acquired the rights, and the project reportedly spent months stalled over its creative direction and how closely Spears would participate. According to Thought Catalog, Jon M. Chu, fresh off “Wicked,” is attached to direct and Liz Meriwether, who created “New Girl,” is writing the screenplay. The film reportedly covers Spears’ arc from child performer to global pop phenomenon, then through the 13-year conservatorship controlled by her father, Jamie Spears, which ended in 2021. Her catalog, including “Baby One More Time,” “Oops!… I Did It Again” and “Toxic,” will apparently run beneath the narrative.

Meriwether has called the memoir’s audiobook “one of the best audiobooks that’s ever been made,” saying Spears’ words “broke my heart in so many ways.” Chu has reportedly urged patience. “We will take it step by step,” he said. “I think that the way is slowly and empathetically.”
