There seemed to be a tension in the air as "The View" hosted JD Vance for a wide-ranging conversation.
Whoopi Goldberg, the show's moderator, welcomed the vice president and author of "Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith," on Tuesday, June 16.
"For 29 seasons, this show has invited thousands of guests, with all kinds of diverse points of view," Goldberg said. "And we have been asking our next guest to join us for a while now. So we're glad that he's taken us up on the offer today."
The audience applauded Vance as he walked to the table and shook hands with the hosts of ABC's long-running program: Joy Behar; Alyssa Farah Griffin, former White House communications director for the Trump administration; Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin and Ana Navarro.
JD Vance says he's Epstein 'conspiracy theorist' on 'View'
Acknowledging the hosts' frequent criticism of Trump, Vance joked at the top of the segment that his media team told him "The View" was "a show of MAGA Republicans." He was questioned about the economy, Trump's comments on inflation, ICE detention centers, immigration, the Epstein files and his faith.
But things escalated when Goldberg asked, "What did Black people do to this administration that has allowed it to really stigmatize folks of color? … It seems that it has been very easy for this administration to remove that and also to denigrate Black folks who have worked their behinds off to get this American dream? I mean, you know better."
Hostin offered examples. "I'm talking about Black history getting erased from public spaces," she explained. "Black voter districts are being dismantled. Black leaders are being sidelined from our ranks. Where do Americans of color fit in this vision? Because it doesn't seem like we fit."

"Maybe you don't believe this coming from me, but I think everyone is welcome to our political coalition," Vance said. "Frankly, even if you didn't vote for us, everybody is welcome in our country, so as long as you're an American citizen with the duties and the legal obligations and rights to be here."
Addressing Goldberg, he continued, "You say that we're anti-minority or anti-Black–"
"No, I didn't say that. I asked," Goldberg clarified. "Don't start any stuff with me, man. Don't get me in trouble."
When Vance spoke about lowering crime in DC, Goldberg and Hostin explained that they weren't asking about crime. "Black history's been erased from public spaces," Hostin reiterated, which Vance denied.
As the show neared a break, Navarro attempted to ask a question, but Goldberg emphasized the need for a commercial. Navarro remained persistent in her questioning, which eventually prompted Goldberg to snap at her.
"I have to go to break!" Goldberg said, clapping her hands to get her co-host's attention. "Ana! God, please!"
"We have more with Vice President JD Vance when we come back," Goldberg added ahead of the commercial break before pleading with Navarro, "Don't do that."
