Author Lars Anderson takes a look back at Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady’s 2009 engagement in his upcoming biography Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness.
The author recounted how the ex-NFL star staged a “911 emergency” in the supermodel’s West Village town house to propose.
Bündchen and Brady were together for over a decade before getting divorced in 2022.
A new book is taking a look back at the early days of Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady’s 15-year-long relationship—including the supermodel’s surprising first reaction when the NFL star popped the question with a dazzling cushion-cut diamond engagement ring worth an estimated $145,000.

Over a decade before Bündchen and Brady called off their marriage in 2022, Lars Anderson recounts how the football player staged a faux “911 emergency” in the catwalk star’s West Village town house so that he could ask her to marry him with a “fairy-tale” set-up. In the biography Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness, out September 29, Anderson set the scene with a January 2009 phone call that Brady gave his then-girlfriend, urging her to meet him at her New York City home.

“Gushing water at 42 Barrow Street was surging and turning Gisele’s West Village town house into a small lagoon. Brady called her cell phone, urgently telling his girlfriend that her red brick Italianate building was flooding and she needed to come home— RIGHT NOW! Hustling through the teeming streets of Manhattan, she worried that some of her most treasured belongings were being damaged beyond recovery,” Anderson wrote.

However, instead of ruined possessions, Bündchen was surprised with a “fairy-tale enchanting” scene illuminated with “lit candles” and romantic scattered “rose petals” spread across the floor. Anderson recounted that Brady “held a four-carat, cushion-cut engagement ring that sparkled with blinding intensity” in one hand and “Gisele was stunned. Her breath caught in her throat.”

However, she was only speechless for a moment before Brady began to kneel on one knee and concern took over. According to Anderson, Bündchen asked him, “What are you doing?” as she “[worried] about his knee three months after surgery. Brady allegedly responded, “I gotta go on my knees,” to which Bündchen insisted, “No, no, no. Get up, please.’” However, just moments later, she enthusiastically told him “Yes, yes, yes” in response to his proposal. The couple got married in February 2009 during a small ceremony in Santa Monica.
Brady and Bündchen—who share son Benjamin, 16, and daughter Vivian, 13 —finalized their divorce in October 2022 following months of speculation. Anderson claimed that the former Victoria’s Secret Angel was the one who ended their marriage with three words after she expressed long-term frustrations with Brady’s football career. Bündchen has since remarried, tying the knot last December with husband Joaquim Valente, with whom she shares a nearly two-year-old son.
